Doberman Barking
Facts about Doberman Barking and How to Control It
While Doberman barking is common, it can be aggravating and a sign of this type of dog’s unstable temperament. Unfortunately, many people who breed Dobermans don’t understand how the process works so they end up with a little of little Dobermans that are aggressive, hyperactive, and emotionally sensitive. The barking, however, is one of the first things that people want to know how to control.
Some Dobermans are emotionally sensitive. If you notice your Doberman barking more than usual, take a look at your home life and try to decide if anything has changed. Did someone move out? Has there been more fighting than usual? Is someone sick? Dobermans love their owners and can sometimes take on emotional stress, much like people. They can show this stress by either becoming sick or barking incessantly.
Some Dobermans are also naturally aggressive and dominant over other dogs. This can also lead to Doberman barking as they try to show the other dogs whose boss. For that reason, it is very important to make sure that your Doberman is trained, bred, handled, and socialized well.
Just because he is aggressive, though, does not mean that the Doberman is malicious or violent. In fact, most of the time his aggression is focused on his task at hand, such as tracking a scent or even performing a trick. It is only when Dobermans are provoked that they become dangerous.
Doberman barking is also a sign that he is a good watchdog. Dobermans like to investigate strange sounds, noises, and people and if they are unsure of anything, they will bark. This is part of their protective nature. They like to check on the people that they love to make sure that everyone is safe. If they can’t find everyone, they might bark to let you know that someone is missing. In this way, they are both territorial and protective.
At the same time, a Doberman is unusually confident and can play off your emotions. If you are confident in a situation, for example, then he probably will be as well. This is important to know when you bring new people around your house.
If you find that your Doberman barking becomes a problem, then there are ways that you can help control it. Sometimes, the Doberman barks because he is bored. In that case, you should take him out and get him some exercise. Let him run around the yard a little bit.
You do not want to stop your Doberman from barking completely, as this allows him to tell you that something is wrong. Instead, you can often train him to “speak” to you by only using 2 or 3 barks at a time, depending on what he is trying to say. Obedience school and dog training can help you with this.
Other times, your Doberman might bark to get your attention, not because anything is wrong but because they are feeling needy. If you know that you have been unintentionally neglecting your dog then you might want to stop what you are doing and give him the attention that he wants.
However, if he is always needy and always requires your attention then constantly stopping what you are doing is not going to work. Instead, do not reward him with attention until after he has stopped his barking.
Training your Doberman is very important in controlling his behavior. It is equally important to be consistent in what you do and to continue with any training that you and your Doberman are going through. He will only learn through practice and repetition.
